I had a plan. We were going to move into our 3rd unit on LGBTQ+ history and current issues. Although this is such an important topic to discuss and learn about, the current race-based violence that is occurring in the USA is taking priority at this time. 1. We have discussed, in detail, power and privilege in Unit 1. As a reminder about white privilege please read the file linked below called "unpacking the knapsack" - Carefully examine the 50 daily effects of white privilege that the author has listed. Which 2 stood out the most for you? Why? Send me your thoughts. 2. Please start with the chart below (What I know and What I want to know...about racial profiling). Write your ideas in the chart. It is absolutely fine if this is kind of empty to begin with. 3. Watch the videos linked below and use the racial profiling handout (linked below) to write down examples of racial profiling. The videos explain racial profiling in both the USA and Canada. Can you add anything to your first chart now that you've watched the videos? Send me your chart. **I need you to know that this isn't only happening in the USA - Look up the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet on google, the case of Colten Boushie or anything to do with the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women epidemic. Note any similarities you notice between the deaths of black community members in the USA and these Canadian examples - Canada is not exempt from racism*** 4. Read this article: Racism In Canada Is Ever Preset from the Huffington Post 5. Find a song that speaks to you and your 'activist/protest' personality. Send me a link to the song. Here's mine: The Cranberries-Zombie 6. Optional - attend the Black Lives Matter peaceful gathering on June 4th at 12:00 in the part beside the Old School Eatery. Practice safe social distancing, wear a mask and stay peaceful.

Sorry it took me so long to get you a movie. I would like for you to watch Hidden Figures (linked below), you will need to log into your office 365 to watch this.
Here are some things you could be thinking about while watching and after watching the movie:
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S MAY ALREADY!?! This 2 week learning opportunity is all about intersectionality and finding real world examples of how people "live feminism". In this learning opportunity 2 things will happen: 1. We must first define intersectionality: Please watch the 2 TedTalks posted below as well as the other 2 youtube videos on intersectionality. Use the Frayer model definition worksheet below (same as the feminism one) to create your definition of Intersectionality. *Although it might be hard, I invite you to read some of the comments under the videos. Notice how you are feeling when you read these. Do you agree with any of them? What are your own thoughts on these videos? 2. I want you to also watch a movie here - I'm just working on how I'm going to get the movie I would like - please be patient with this.
We will meet on Tuesday, April 28 at 11:00 on Teams. I have emailed you all the meeting invite on your school email. Please accept the invite on Teams and it will automatically go into your calendar.
I need a few things from you, if you haven't already handed them in: 1. 5 journals - from your book 2. identity art 3. evidence journal I miss you. See you there! If you have not done your unit 1 evidence journal interview with me I will be contacting you this week to set up a time to do that.
I miss you. This is a 2 week learning opportunity. Take your time. Engage in this if it causes no harm. This learning opportunity is all about creating your own DEFINITION OF FEMINISM. First - we need to learn some vocabulary around feminism so that we have the words to use when we make our own definition - Watch all of the videos linked below (yes, all 5 of them). As you watch take some notes. Then - we need to learn a bit about the history behind the women's movements and their impact. Go to this website to record information about the 3 waves of feminism plus any additional information you find useful. Last - we need to find a framework that ensures we have a complete definition. Use the graphic organizer below (called the Frayer model) to create your definition of feminism. Notice that you also have to define what feminism isn't. Try your best here. Email me a picture of your graphic organizer when you are done.
Good morning,
I want to offer some learning opportunities for this week. I only want you to engage with this learning if it does not cause you harm. Some of you have been asking me for a bit of 'work' and routine in your lives. We will move on in our learning here by continuing to focus on our unit 2 essential question which is; "What is the relationship between patriarchy, power, privilege and feminism?". We will continue onwards to explore learning in our specific objectives - See the picture below for the objectives. Previously we have explored; power and privilege and we are now moving into it's impact on women throughout time. To do this please do the following: 1. Watch this Movie (On The Basis of Sex): you must sign into your office 365 account to do so, this movie needs the 'stream' app that's found in office 365. A plot summary can be found HERE. 2. When you've watched the movie, or even during, I want you to write down your thoughts. Here are some sample questions you can respond to:
Hey there kidlets,
This week, your new homeroom teachers, will be calling your houses to see what you need. These needs can range from technology (computers, iPads) to food access needs. Please let your teachers know what you may need. Next steps for teachers and support staff is going to be moving our learning onto Office 365, and specifically the TEAMS section of office 365. More about that next week. For now, I want you to know a few things: 1. I miss you. Brushy misses you. 2. I have created a Team for our SJ12 class. I will use that Team primarily for video instruction and for us to do circles and smiles and frowns together. 3. I will use this blog to post the resources and "evidence of learning/assignments" that we will be doing. 4. I know I said it already but, I miss you. Can't wait to see your faces over in Teams soon. Love, Dana and Brushy Hey kidlets,
How are you all holding up? I want you to know that all of your teachers are working really hard right not to figure out the best way to move forward. We are looking at using office 365 more and more to connect with you in the best way we can. Today there is another meeting to discuss possibilities and needs that you and your families have during this time. More information can be found at the RSS website homepage. Please know, I love and miss you. Sending you healthy vibes. Dana and Brushy Students, parents, friends.
I wish that I had the answer to your questions. I really do. I know that information brings comfort and things are changing so quickly that the information sharing can't keep up. This is all so very uncomfortable. Breathe. Here's what I know: 1. Schools are committed to ensuring that will have opportunities to continue to learn. I don't know how, or what that looks like yet. 2. Being healthy and safe comes first. Period. 3. Love will not be cancelled. Ever. 4. I should know more details about school district plans by Friday afternoon and I will share them here when I know. Stay put, stay strong. More to come kidlets. Stay tuned. |
