Roadmap for today: 1. Randy and Erica from Revelstoke Mental Health and Substance Use at Queen Victoria Hospital are coming in at 12:40 today. They will be teaching us about the service work they do up at QVH and it's impacts in our community. This will help us to better understand, from our learning outcomes, how to "define social justice and provide examples of how this looks in my community". 2. We will continue with our Identity lesson today and get into our 21 Identity statements. 3. Watch this video on how artists express their identities through their art and start our own self-portraits. I've attached the lesson below as a file. What we did: 1. Randy and Erica were amazing at presenting to us the work they do for Mental Health and Substance Use. Some key takeaways to think about: *Harm reduction strategies *combating stigma and shame *who can access their services at QVH *how to access help for a friend who is struggling with mental health/substance use 2. You had 20 minutes to journal about their visit, read your book, take a break or write some of your book journal entries. I've asked you to hand these in so that we can provide feedback to our guests and I can provide feedback to you. Second block 3. We looked at twitter as an agent for information and recap last days work on identity 4.We completed our 21 Identity statements and I've attached mine here (not complete) for reference. We started thinking about our art projects and we will work on these for the next 2 weeks.
Roadmap for today: 1. Review classroom charter that was developed yesterday. 2. Start Unpacking Identity lesson - I have created a little student handout for this to ensure that this is accessible for all. It is attached below for anyone to use. 3. We will also be looking at starting our own visual representations of our own personal identity. We will be enlisting the help of our amazing art department as our masterful teachers. There will be a lot of choice, independence and freedom with this next project. 4. We also need to start thinking about our Evidence Journal and how we will demonstrate our learning at the end of this unit and semester.
Roadmap for today: 1. Smiles and Frowns, and then finish Erin Brokovich 2. Discuss themes and thoughts from the movie 3. Compile and discuss the "draw the line" activity from last week 4. Develop classroom Charter of Rights 5. I don't think there will be time today, but just in case: Start identity lesson What we did: We pretty much followed the roadmap today. After we finished the movie we discussed, briefly, that water rights issues are still happening in Canada and the US with mention of Flint, Michigan and Attawapisskat First Nation. Students were asked to go into 7 small groups to dissect and discuss the UN Convention on The Rights of The Child. Each group then came back to the larger class and summarized their findings. We then translated these rights into our classroom convention. Dana (or most likely another amazing artist) will write these out nicely and we will all sign them.
